Best Laid Plans of Men and Mice

Still in Holden, AZ at the Flying J Truckstop with a dead battery in the new Saturn Vue.  In order to tow the Saturn you must put it in neutral and turn the key to accessory.  Well, when you turn it to accessory it turns on stuff like the clock, radio, dash lights, etc.  Seems like everytime you stop for fuel you are supposed to turn it on and charge up the battery and at night turn it to off, remove the key and lock.  Of course, I did none of those things so when we got ready to leave and I went and checked it, the battery was dead as a door nail.

Went inside to the scenic Flying J, photo below, and bought some battery cables.  Jon ten got the Penske truck and we jumped the Saturn.  Got it started and now waiting for it to charge.  Should be out of here by noon or shortly thereafter.

Flying J Truckstop in Holden, AZ

Take a close look at the two guys sitting in front of the Flying J.  They are hitchhiking across the country…..brrrr.  Not as bad as it was, it’s now up to 35 degrees.

Here’s a photo of John, Oscar and Jake braving the cold in front of “Big Bertha”, the motorhome.  Not sure who is the unhappiest, the puppies or John.  I asked him to smile, that’s all I could get.

That’s it for now….time to check the Saturn and get back on the road.

More tonight,

On The Way to Delaware

Finally left Palm Springs today (Wednesday, Dec 12th) about noon.  Man, what a hassle.  Started packing the motorhome and a Penske truck with furniture for the house in Seaford on Monday.  Took all day Monday and Tuesday and finally got it all loaded this morning.

A big thanks to Lee, one of my best friends and associates at work in Palm Springs.  Without him helping to pack and load and providing lots of encouraging words….in addition to making cocktails each night, not so sure we would have gotten underway by noon.   Thanks Lee!   And, to John, who is driving behind me in the Penske truck, another great big thanks.

We are parked in a truck stop in Holden, AZ.  Cold as hell outside…..about 23 degrees.  As we went through Flagstaff on I-40, their was about 6 inches of snow alongside the road.  Road was clear.  Funny thing was we stopped at a rest area to let the dogs out to do their thing……it was the first time they had seen snow much less step in it.   At first they thought it was great, then their paws and noses got cold…so, a fast tinkle from both and we then had to pick them up and get them back in the coach.  Both were shivering.   Got a feeling they are going to miss Palm Springs.

Today we drove a total of 470 miles at an average speed of 62 mph.  Onboard computer says the coach is getting 6.6 mpg…..ugh…and at $3.19, which is what it is in Arizona.  But then, it was all uphill.  Flagstaff is at an elevation of roughly 7,300 feet.

In my last post, I promised a photo of Jake, so here he is.  A dapple, long hair doxie.  Supposed to me a mini but he sure is getting big and only 8 months old!

It’s now a bit after 2 AM Arizona time so I’m off to bed now.

First Post

Just created this blog at www.blogdumps.com.  Took about 2 minutes. UNBELIEVABLE!  Thanks wolbernz for making this possible.

I’m BillnPs and I’m currently in Palm Springs but getting ready to head back to Seaford, DE in my motorhome so I thought I might chronicle my journey from one cost to another, take a few picutres and keep everyone informed of the travels and the kind of weather and other stuff I run into.

Oscar at 7 weeks and me

I’ll be traveling with my two mini-doxie….Oscar and Jake.  Assuming we hit some snow, which looks like we will, this will be the first time either have seen snow, so that should be interesitng.   Here is a photo of Oscar and me.  I’ll post pics of Jake and Oscar together soon.  Oscar is a wire hair doxie and Jake is a dapple long hair.

Big Bertha the Motorhome

The motorhome is a 45 foot long  2005 Essex, made by Newmar, affectionately named “Big Bertha”,  in Nappanee, IN.  I’ll be pulling a 2008 Saturn Vue.  For those of you who don’t know where Nappanee, IN is, it’s just south of I-80 in northern Indiana, which makes me think I’ll most likely be hitting some snow.

On the way I’ll be stopping off in Hastings, NE to visit my daughter, son in law, and first grandchild, “Sam”.  Sam is really Samantha Natalie, but I like Sam.

Sam’s the day she was born

The photo above, from left to right, is John, my partner, Sam (the little one), Brandy (my daughter) and Tom, (my son in law).

Once I get to the factory at Newmar, I’ll be leaving the coach there and Oscar, Jake and I will then drive the Saturn on in to Delaware across the Indiana Turnpike, Ohio Turnpike, eventually to I-70, then making our way south to the Balto/DC area and then on across the Bay Bridge and eventually to Seaford.

We leave on Wed, Dec 12, and hope to arrive in Seaford on the 17th.  Stay tuned as we make our way across.  Hope to get some interesting photos for you.

BillnPS soon to be BillnDE
